Nailsea Electrical in Bristol saves two thousand pounds with the saving experts at Make It Cheaper.

When Peter Gilks opened his first electrical retail shop in Nailsea just outside Bristol thirty years ago, there wasn't much choice over where he bought his energy from. Back in the days when the gas and electricity industries were all under state ownership, he was able to focus on the other demands of building a business from scratch. And build it he certainly did! A few years on, Peter opened a second shop to make 'Nailsea Electrical' the largest independent retailer of electrical appliances in Bristol. A string of awards followed, from HTV's Young Businessman of the Year in 1988 to being shortlisted for the Independent Electrical Retailer of the Year in 2011.
Nailsea Electrical is still proudly family-owned with Peter now joined at the helm by his son Ben. A 13-strong team run the 8,000 square foot showrooms and warehouse on the Gloucester Road in the heart of Bristol's vibrant independent trading community. This includes the UK's first interactive built-in appliance showroom with over 300 fully working state-of-the-art models, including the largest selection of range cookers in the South West of England. The latest development for this innovative business is to run regular cookery demonstrations by celebrity chefs in a dedicated area of the building that has been converted from a Grade 2 listed church. Classes run alongside the events, including cookery courses and 'demonstration & dine' evenings with tutored wine tasting, led by some of the region's finest Michelin Starred and AA rosette rated culinary stars.
With more floor space to manage and plenty of activity going on beyond normal opening hours, you would expect the energy consumption of the business to be creeping up. The larger bills hadn't gone un-noticed by the Finance Department either, who decided to conduct a review of their long-standing suppliers and the rates they were being charged. They also saw this as an opportunity to bring their two electricity accounts and one gas account in line with one-another so the renewal dates would be easier to manage going forward. Unsure of where to start looking and distrusting of the cold-calling brokers who appeared to veil who they actually represented, Nailsea Electrical turned to Make It Cheaper for its promise of free and impartial advice.
In a 30-minute call to Make It Cheaper's London-based call centre, Nailsea Electrical was able to set up new business gas and business electricity contracts on competitive rates that will save it around £2,000 on its energy bills over the next 12 months. Importantly for the Finance Department, this also saved them a day's worth of time by not having to ring round all the individual energy suppliers for quotes. One of the key benefits of using Make It Cheaper is that it has access to rates available from all of the main 'Big Six' energy suppliers as well as some of the smaller ones that just specialise in supplying businesses. As it happens, Nailsea Electrical's gas is now supplied by lesser-known 'Gazprom' that came out as least expensive in the price comparison table that Make It Cheaper was able to compile.
Peter explains: "Our energy advisor, Zoe Whitehall, explained everything clearly and made the process for us to switch to cheaper suppliers very easy. We got the result we wanted without it costing us anything to use the service. It's not often you find someone who can genuinely save you time, hassle and money.
