Switch Suppliers

In business, switching your energy supplier is one of the best ways to keep your bills at a manageable level. But, before you start hunting down business energy quotes from other suppliers, it can help to brush up on some knowledge about the energy industry and what your rights are.

When operating within the energy market there are a number of obligations that a supplier has to meet. For example, once you sign up to a business energy contract, it is the supplier’s responsibility to contact you within no more than 10-days outlining the full terms and conditions of your contract. Take the time to read through these and understand them – it can pay dividends next time you come to switch.

It’s also your supplier’s responsibility to inform you when your renewal window opens. As standard this is 90-days prior to the end date of your contract. But, your supplier must provide written confirmation of this, and they must also explain their automatic renewal policy, if applicable, and the terms of their deemed contracts.

At the end of your contract one of two things can happen. Depending on your supplier, you may be rolled onto a new fixed term contract – often with slightly higher rates – although this practice is becoming less common. Alternatively, your supplier may move you on to a 30-day rolling contract with deemed rates, which are typically a supplier’s most expensive rates, until you formally organise a new contract.

Please Note: Deemed business energy contracts starting after 30 April 2015 only need to provide 30-days’ notice to cancel, but longer term contracts starting before 30 April 2015 must provide a minimum of 90-days.

It’s possible to opt-out of your supplier’s automatic renewal scheme on the first day of your contract. All you have to do is write to them once your contract is set up and request to be removed from automatic renew. This is preferable to being tied into a new long term contract with higher rates, but forgetting to take action within your renewal window will leave you on deemed rates until you organise a new contract.
