Owed money

Unless you have a smart meter, or you provide your supplier with monthly meter readings, there is a degree of estimation included in your business’s energy billing. This can result in your account being in debt or credit, depending if your supplier has been under or over-estimating your level of consumption.

If you find that your business energy account is in credit, you should write to you supplier to ensure that they refund this back to you. Once you have written to your supplier requesting a refund, they have an obligation to return the money within 10-days.

Please note: Your supplier is not legally obliged to inform you that your account is in credit. Certain suppliers will automatically transfer credit back once it reaches a certain amount, however most will not refund credit until you make an explicit request.

In some cases your supplier will request the following information from you before refunding any account credit:

  • A current meter reading
  • Details of any other business energy accounts that you have with them

If this account, or any of your other accounts with the supplier are in debt, then the amount will be offset against the credit before any refunds are made.

The method that you pay for your energy will typically determine how any account credit will be refunded back to you. For example:

  • Direct debit: Your supplier will refund the credit directly into your bank.
  • Pay by card: Your supplier will typically refund the credit back to the card you usually pay with.
  • Other methods (BACS etc): Your supplier will offer a credit refund in the form of a cheque.

In the event that you’re looking to close your account and it’s in credit, then you can typically expect for any funds to be refunded to you automatically - using the methods above - no more than 28-days after your final bill is issued. If this is not the case, don’t panic! There’s no expiration date on energy account credit, so you can retrospectively claim account credit even if your account is closed.

Finally, businesses who have poor or no credit rating may be asked to pay a security deposit before being allowed a business energy contract. If this is the case, you can expect the security deposit to be refunded back to you - after it has been used to offset any account debt - at least 28-days after you received your final bill.

If you are having difficulty having account credit refunded, then you should write to you supplier outlining the issue. If the issue is still not resolved within 14-dyas then you can escalate it to the Energy Ombudsman, who will independently investigate and decide on a ruling.
