Every business has its energy use measured, and if your firm consumes particularly high levels of electricity then it’s likely you’ll have your usage closely monitored by a specialised half hourly meter.
These meters get their name from the fact that they automatically submit a reading to your supplier every 30 minutes. This helps to ensure you’re billed as accurately as possible – which is important given the volume of electricity you’re using – and means you don’t have to worry about submitting readings yourself.
The technology also makes it easier for you to get to grips with your usage, as the detail provided by the meters means you can track the impact of any energy efficiency measures you’ve introduced in a bid to reduce your consumption.
Does my business need a half hourly meter?
If your business has a peak demand of 100KVA or more in any 30 minute period then you’ll be obliged to have a half hourly meter. However, as the technology can be useful in helping businesses reduce their consumption – and ultimately their bills – then you can also opt to have a meter installed if you have a peak demand in excess of 70KVA
For businesses that are moving into new premises, it’s always sensible to check if you already have a half hourly meter installed. The best way to do this is to look at the ‘S number’ on a previous bill, and if the number in the top-left box is 00 then you’ll know you have a half hourly meter. Here’s an example:
If you do have a half hourly meter, you’ll also need a Meter Operator (MOP) Agreement for the maintenance of your meter – as well as a Data Collector (DC) who’ll process your half hourly readings.
How much does half hourly electricity cost?
As businesses with half hourly meters consume significant levels of electricity, suppliers are inclined to charge them slightly cheaper rates in order to secure their custom.
However, prices do differ depending on where businesses are located in the UK, with consumption volume and the type of tariff a business is on also affecting the cost.
