Quickbooks (4 stars) – this accounting app is available in 2 versions especially for small businesses and the self-employed. It offers on the go accounting solutions. You can manage expenses, payroll, cash-flow, taxes, invoicing and more from your phone, making it easy to do business wherever you are.

Office Lens (5 stars) – with Office Lens, your phone can become a scanner. You can scan any document you need, from wherever you are – and the app can convert them into editable Word and Powerpoint files. 1Tap (5 stars) – this mobile expenses app was designed with sole traders in mind. You can upload receipts as you go, just by taking a photo, and the app will extract all the key information. It can then be shared with whoever may need access. Even more useful, is the fact that expenses are categorised in line with HMRC, making it great for storing the assets you’ll need come tax-return time.

Tiny Scanner (4.5 stars) – similar to office lens, this app will turn your phone into a scanner, allowing you to scan and send documents on the move. They can be stored on your device as a pdf and shared easily with recipients. Perfect if you’re not able to get to a computer, or need to send something swiftly – you can also set sizes (e.g. A4 / A5) and have the option to use colour, greyscale or black and white.
