Your business tip of the month from Make It Cheaper: Share your screen using Join.me or Skype
Never get confused again. Join.me and Skype can share your screen so that everyone is literally on the same page.
Long gone are the days of struggling to describe what’s on your computer screen to someone on the other end of the phone, or being on the receiving end of an explanation you don’t quite understand.
This month, we show you how to share your screen using the website Join.me and the desktop program Skype - two tools that make it really easy. We think there are lots of situations where this could make business a lot simpler, like talking through figures with an accountant or collaborating with someone on a new piece of advertising or creative work.
How to share your screen using Join.me
Go to Join.me (that’s the full name of the website) and select ‘start meeting’ from the homepage.
When this box appears, click ‘Run’.
Once Join.me has downloaded, this task bar will appear at the top of your screen. The link beginning join.me/ is your unique screen-sharing ID.
Click on the downward arrow next to your unique ID. This will open a box that lets you copy the link, email the link or tell invitees the code they need to see your screen (they just need to select ‘Join meeting’ instead of ‘Start meeting’ on the Join.me homepage and type in the code you tell them).
When invitees enter your unique ID link into their Internet browser, they will see your desktop as a webpage. Here's one we made earlier:
When you want to stop sharing your screen, just click on the 'x' to close the Join.me task bar, which we showed you in Step 3.
So, how can you share your screen with Skype?
Skype lets you share screens and hold a voice or video call at the same time. It's free and used by more than 500 million people worldwide.
Make sure you have Skype installed on your computer. There's a handy how-to here, if you need to install Skype on your computer.
All you need to do is start a voice or video call then press the (+) button and select ‘Share your screen’.
If you have multiple screens open, it will ask you to select the one you want to share.
Once you’ve selected the window you want, everyone on the call can see your screen just by looking at the Skype call window. Simple as that!
