Your business tip of the month: Keep accounts secure with 1Password

Save yourself time and hassle by using 1Password to store your passwords, making your online accounts secure and easy to access.

Do you find yourself regularly clicking on ‘Forgot your password’ links to retrieve your website login details? Or maybe you choose to risk your online security by using the same password over and over again?

We’ve recently discovered a nifty tool that solves these problems and is making our lives easier.

1Password stores all your website login details in a secure vault so that you only need to remember one password to access all your accounts when you go online.

We want to help you get to grips with this program in this month's business tip blog so that you can save time and hassle. So, what would you like to do first?:

Set up 1Password on your computer

Step 1

Download and install 1Password on your computer using the links below:



Step 2

Create a vault on your computer. To do this, open the program on your computer and select ‘I am a new 1Password user’. Then enter a ‘Master Password’ and select a location for your desktop vault .

Now that you're logged in, all you need to do is click on 'New Item' on the quick access bar running across the top of the screen to start adding your logins. Or, just add your accounts' log in details when you next use them (see step 3 in the next section).

You can even synchronise your 1Password account on your computer and your phone using either Wi-Fi or Dropbox. That means you can take your secure passwords with you wherever you go.

Log in automatically online using 1Password

The great thing about 1Password is that it can be 'plugged into' your Internet browser, so that you can automatically log into your accounts without having to jump from one computer program to another.

Step 1

In 1Password on your computer, select ‘File’ and then ‘Preferences’.

Step 2

Open the ‘Browser’ tab and click on the install button for the Internet browser or browsers you like to use.

Whenever you log into an account (like Twitter, for example) through that browser, 1Password will ask if you want to save the details to your vault. If you save it, you can automatically login in the future.

When you next want to login to Twitter, all you need to do is click on your browser extension section, select 1Password and then pick the relevant account from the login section. Pretty soon, your 1Password extension will feel like a list of bookmarked websites that you frequently use.

Alternatively, go to the Twitter login page and then select 1Password from the extension bar. You'll see that Twitter is top of the menu. Click on it and you'll log in.

Store passwords on your phone

Step 1

Open the app and select ‘Logins’ from the new user start up menu. (If you are a returning user, press the ‘+’ in the top right corner of the screen to reopen this menu).

Fill in the details of the website or account that your password relates to.

Click on the little ‘x’ to the right of your generated password. This deletes the one that they’ve made for you and allows you to type in your own.

Once you’ve added all the details you need for the account, just click ‘Done’.

Step 5

Whenever you need to access that account, all you need to do is log into the 1Password app and click on the website address and the app will log you in automatically.
