Opus Energy Confirms Position on Smart Meters
Following the recent publication of its
report into Smart Meters, Make It Cheaper has welcomed
responses from a number of energy suppliers that provide services
to the non-domestic sector.
Make It Cheaper will be using this feedback as part of its
ongoing research to clarify and confirm the position of suppliers
when it comes to the compatibility and fee structure of using smart
meters.
Where possible, it will also publish responses from suppliers.
Here, for example, Charlie Crossley-Cooke, MD of Opus Energy,
describes why his business doesn't add additional charges for
metering:
"We're seeing a number of reports relating to business customers
being imposed with additional standing charges on their bills for
smart meters. Opus Energy encourages rather than penalises
customers that have smart meters installed. We do not levy extra
standing charges for premises with smart meters.
"Customers with smart meters are five times less likely to have
a complaint as a result of bill transparency. This means that we
can reduce our service delivery costs, in turn enabling us to
reduce our energy prices.
"Hitting customers with additional rental charges for meters
does nothing to increase take-up of new technologies. It's only
when the industry can be seen to be working together to roll out
smart meters that we'll see a more dynamic energy market offering
customers the control they need over their usage and pricing.
"The market needs greater transparency and business owners
shouldn't have to decipher how their energy bills are made up."
