Companies should involve staff in becoming greener.

'Businesses should motivate staff to promote greener practices'

05/08/2010

Motivating staff can help to promote greener practices in small businesses.

Writing on Freshbusinessthinking.com, journalist Paul Worswick emphasised the benefits of being green in business.

He also believes that a better morale can result from involving staff in making the company greener.

Initially companies should tackle the obvious areas of light, heat, power and fuel.

When looking at becoming greener in terms of a business's heating it is important to look around the premises and look at the bills to see if the thermostat can be turned down.

It is also crucial to talk to staff on the premises and get their input on how much they think the heating or air conditioning can be turned down.

"Perhaps you can look at ways to motivate them to get involved - how about promising to spend any savings on the heating and air conditioning on a party for them?" Mr Worswick explained.

He also suggested talking to The Carbon Trust about ways in which they can help you to make premises greener. The independent company was set up by the government to take the lead on low carbon technologies.
