Growing number of businesses 'reporting carbon emissions'

Showing their commitment to joining carbon reduction initiatives, a growing number of firms are reporting their carbon emissions, a new report has revealed.
Almost seven in ten organisations which reported their emissions to the Mayday Network in 2009 managed to reduce their carbon footprint this year, the report from the organisation showed.
Members of the network that lowered their carbon emissions did so by seven per cent, saving more than 422,000 tonnes of CO2, the first ever Mayday Annual report revealed.
Highlighting how reliant firms are on fossil fuels, instead of more efficient business energy sources, 76 per cent of the companies surveyed said they could not foresee a future where they would be able to turn a profit without releasing greenhouse gases.
Philip Green, chair of the Mayday Leadership Team and chief executive officer of United Utilities, said: "Creating a sustainable future in which the needs of people, planet and profit are balanced, will require all of society to be fully involved.
"Businesses thriving on innovation and responding to demand have a pivotal role to play and we will be at the heart of the shift to a sustainable society."
Recently, research from the Carbon Trust revealed 74 per cent of finance decision makers admit their business does not currently measure its carbon footprint.
