MoD to get business energy from wind turbine
13/08/2010
Energy giant EON has installed the first wind turbine on Ministry of Defence (MoD) land in a bid to help the department meet its target of getting ten per cent of its business energy from renewable sources.
The 15m-tall turbine is based at the Duke of York's Royal Military School near Dover and will help the MoD cut its carbon emissions by 114 tonnes over the next 20 years.
Speaking to BusinessGreen.com, EON microgeneration sales manager Colin Grenville said: "Up to now, wind energy was seen as a bit of a no go for MoD sites as there had been a number of issues with radar interference.
"This project shows what can be done even where there has been historic opposition."
Last week, figures from the Department of Environment and Climate Change highlighted that some 2.5 per cent of the UK's domestic and business energy is provided by windfarms, making wind power the UK's biggest source of renewable energy.
