How to find your renewal window and avoid getting 'rolled' by your supplier

Unlike household energy users (who are free to change supplier whenever they wish) most businesses are restricted by a fixed window of time before their contract expires in which they are permitted to switch. Failure to act during this window, which can open and close again as far as 90 days ahead of the contract end date, means being automatically rolled-over onto a new contract at a higher rate.

The length of the window - and when it falls - varies dramatically between suppliers, and its significance is often mistakenly overlooked by the bill payer. Suppliers are obliged to send a renewal letter detailing the renewal rate and when customers must give notice if they wish to switch supplier but our research shows that the vast majority of businesses (79%) do not recall ever receiving such a letter.
